Lighting

For many buildings, lighting uses up more energy than anything else. But substantial savings can be made in this area by designing and installing the right units and controls.

Lighting is a major energy consumer in buildings. It is estimated energy consumption for commercial lighting accounted for 47.9TWh of electricity in 2005. Substantial energy savings are available through use of the most efficient equipment. Substitution of standard units by high efficiency lighting units can typically generate savings of between 20% and 70%.

Rather than individual products being listed, businesses can see which manufacturers have completed a supplier assessment of their products against the energy-saving criteria for high efficiency lighting units or lighting controls. These manufacturers should be able to advise businesses who want to invest in equipment that’s eligible for an Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA).

However, just because a manufacturer appears on the list doesn’t mean that all their products will be eligible. When consulting them, businesses should always specify that they want to make an ECA claim on the equipment they purchase.
