Pipework insulation

Although pipework insulation is a non-listed technology, individual products can qualify for an Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) if they meet the criteria set out in the Energy Technology Criteria List.

Claiming an ECA
Energy technology criteria for pipework insulation are based on compliance with the British Standard BS5422. This specifies the various thicknesses of insulation required for different circumstances, so it’s impossible to list individual products on the Energy Technology Product List. Each case must be considered in isolation.

The company buying the equipment should get written confirmation from their supplier that the pipework insulation and any attachments have been fitted in line with BS5422. Using this, the company should be able to work out what percentage of its purchase qualifies for an ECA and submit a claim.

Suppliers are best placed to advise businesses on buying and installing pipework insulation that qualify for an ECA. However, not all their products will necessarily be eligible. When investing in pipework insulation businesses should always specify in writing to their supplier that they want products that qualify for an ECA.

Suppliers of pipework insulation should be able to advise that businesses on which of their products are eligible for an ECA. Therefore businesses looking to purchase pipework insulation should seek confirmation of compliance for the products they intend to purchase to the ETL criteria from the product supplier. The confirmation issued by the supplier should then be used to support an ECA claim.
